Traveling in the UK

Anyone travelling to the UK must ensure that the have clearance to enter the country. For the latest information refer to the UK Border Agency. The organisers of the IRT cannot provide letters of introduction or sponsorship for anyone travelling into the United Kingdom.

Money
UK currency is Sterling. You will find currency bureaus at major airports and most major banks. £1 is equal to 100 pence, coins come in 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2, notes in £5, £10, £20 and £50. For foreign exchange rate estimates - www.xe.com/ucc

Gratuities
With very few exceptions, tips are not included in the final tabulation of restaurant bills. Tips are usually 10% of the total bill. Cab drivers and hotel staff are usually tipped at the customer’s discretion.

Liquor Laws
The legal drinking age in the UK is 18. Bars and other licensed establishments are open Monday through Sunday.

Credit Cards
Major credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa are accepted almost everywhere.  The UK uses ‘chip and pin’ technology so check with your card issuer prior to travel to ensure your card can be used in the UK.

Smoking Regulations
The Tobacco Law forbids smoking in all public buildings, including bars and restaurants.

Medical Treatment
Visitors are not allowed to enter or stay in the UK to receive free medical treatment from the NHS. Except for treatment given in a hospital’s accident and emergency department, you will be charged for any treatment you received. You should ensure that you have enough medical insurance to cover your stay.
